I grew up in a small village. Most of the 800 members of the community had a very vocal opinion about each other. Sticking your head out of the grey, homogenous mass and being yourself were not seen as values, especially not something a little girl should pursue.
“Be polite, speak only when asked, and keep your pretty clothes clean” – I was told.
Since then, a lot has changed. The little girl, who was at the beginning afraid of the sharp tongues, and later painted her hair red and run head-first into every wall, is gone now. Who’s left in her shoes? Look at my jewelry, and you might very well know 🙂
