We have a new box landing on our beadmats, ‘Desert Rose‘.  Let’s bead together the newest collection of Beadingschool Academy jewels!

You can bead these jewels from the September/October Theme Box of the Beadingschool Academy. As a Beadingschool Academy Student, you receive one or two signature jewel tutorials depending on your membership. Every Thursday, we bring you a #NoOneHasToBeadAlone workshop where you can use the same material. You can download these tutorials as gifts from Beadingschool for a limited time – 3 days after a workshop.

Additional tutorials will be available in the Bead Shop, and there might be more in beading magazines, and made by our friends – designers.

BECOME A STUDENT OF THE BEADINGSCHOOL ACADEMY!

If you are a Beadingschool Academy Student, I highly recommend putting together ‘mini kits’ for the jewels you’d like to make, according to our recent Blog article!

This way, you can make sure that you can finish everything that you’d like to. There are many possibilities to use the precious content of the Box, as not only the Beadingschool Creative Team but fellow designers are also designing jewels for you, and sometimes you’ll need to make decisions about how you’d like to use a component or add something from your stash if you’d like to bead them all.

ERG CHEBBI BY ERIKA

Erg Chebbi is a magnificent, rose gold coloured sand dune in Morocco, near the village of Merzouga.

That’s where I learned that not only does it rain sometimes in the Sahara, but it is also possible to slide down the slopes – if you are inventive enough and dare to join the dozen kids laughing, shouting, and teasing each other – and eventually, you.

The Erg Chebbi motif is like a blooming flower: a sparkly ‘heart’ inside, radiating with brilliance, petals from the Ginkgo beads, and elaborate decoration from the many beautiful seed beads that come from the Desert Rose Beadingschool Academy Theme Box.

This is a variation of the motif, and the .pdf will contain instructions on how to finish it this alternative way if it resonates with you more!
On top of the Desert Rose Box, I added a pair of 8×32 mm pendant drops – leftovers from my previous ‘Towards the Lighthouse’ Beadingschool Academy Theme Box.

It starts in the same way as the version above (that is the one that we will bead during #NoOneHasToBeadAlone, not this).

Named after another dune of the Sahara – Erg Chigaga is playing with the colors of the sand in the early morning, when the sunlight warms it up after the darkness of the night.

AQUILA BY VERONKA

With the Desert Rose theme in mind, I couldn’t resist the combination of Ginkgo with Leaf beads; they were simply asking to come together when I opened the new box. After some trials and errors, I finally found out that sometimes you can’t overthink it, and that there is beauty in simple shapes.

The shape and colours of the jewel reminded me of a different kind of Rose… a Stone Rose. ‘Aquila’ is a perennial, thick-velvety-leaved, hardy succulent. The leaves are arranged in a rosette. In spring, watch the colour-changing leaves emerge into an evergreen treasure trove of lavender hues.

OASIS BY VERONKA

Colorful and happy, just like an oasis in a desert. Delicate and interesting shape… is it real, or is it a mirage?

The “base motif” of this jewel brings many possibilities. We will bead necklace and earrings, but you can make a bracelet as well! Just connect more “base motifs” together to make a shiny string :-).

LANTANA BY ZUZI 

Once, during every Beadingschool Academy Theme, we bead a RETRO #NoOneHasToBeadAlone design. This time, we returned to Lantana earrings.

The soft and delicate look of this design is connected in similarity with  flowers of Lantana. They have a sweet smell and attracts butterflies, dragonflies and also hummingbirds. Zuzi says: ‘The bezel works well on its own, providing further inspiration for making a bracelet, or connector in a necklace.’

SERAYA BY ZUZI 

In deserts, where the journey was harsh and water scarce, a serai represented life, refuge, and renewal. It was often built near oases, with palm trees, gardens, and wells — transforming the barren into something nurturing. Whispering of desert nights and hidden sanctuaries, Seraya captures the mystery of a secret resting place in the sands. Soft blush tones echo the delicate bloom of the desert rose, while crystal accents shimmer like starlight over a quiet spring. Framed in earthy greens and warm bronze, the design represents a refuge — both grounding and ethereal. Seraya is a symbol of renewal and wonder, reminding us that even in the most untamed landscapes, beauty patiently waits to be found.

Seraya is easy to bead, bringing almost instant satisfaction of finished jewel. The design is perfect for a bracelet, if you connect more motifs together.

MIRAYA BY ANIKO

Miraya is a name infused with the fragrance of desert winds. At its heart shines a Preciosa chaton, radiant as a drop of dew. The ginkgo beads are like ancient symbols of resilience and renewal. The Spacer bars with cubic zirconia form tiny constellations, scattering light like stars in the desert night sky. Miraya holds the essence of the Desert Rose — beauty born not of abundance, but of endurance. It is a jewel carrying the sweetness of a hidden perfume, and the quiet desire for life to flourish against all odds.

I used the ear stud as a drop by bending the stud with pliers. This motif reminds beaders that refinement often lies in small details, and basic beading techniques can result in elegance when pearls, crystals, and shapes meet in harmony. It can be a pendant, a brooch, or a hair clip.

TEIDE BY LAURA

Laura says about the inspiration: ‘This pendant is inspired by the amazing flowers on Mount Teide in Tenerife. It’s amazing that flowers and vegetation can thrive in volcanic ground. Nature creates these powerful destructive events such as volcanic eruptions, but when they are over, plants thrive in the volcanic soil. This pendant captures the drama of the volcanic soil and the vibrant colours of flowers that can grow from the ash.’

This pendant uses double right angle weave to create structure, and peyote stitch to create a beaded flower. Beaders will learn how to secure the central cabochon using a lattice of bugles.

Size of the motif: 5 x 7 cm / 1.97 x 2.75 inch

REBUTIA BY LAURA

Laura named this design after the beautiful flowering cactus. She also says: ‘Iwas inspired by the amazing layers in the desert rose crystal. There are so many interesting folds in the crystal and each tells a wonderful story. With this design I was thinking about the layers of the crystal and I was also imagining layers of petals in concentric circles!’
What beaders will learn: How to create layers in bead embroidery that add a 3D dimension, and a novel way to edge the piece that doesn’t require a traditional edging method to sew the layers together.

DOMINO BY LAURA

Beaders will learn how to create a robust yet flexible motif using spacers and bezels. The construction starts with an unusual centre using sew on rhinestones, which beaders could explore in their own designs.

This motif is inspired by the Domino cactus which produces a beautiful pink flower. When I saw the beautiful vibrant pink crystals and subtle greens in this box, I was reminded of a beautiful cactus that my friend showed me in her kitchen! It’s called the Domino cactus and she had no idea that it flowers when she bought it, but after a couple of years it produced beautiful big flowers. Sometimes the most beautiful blooms can come from places we don’t expect, and a little care over a sustained period can produce something amazing!

The thorn symbol has played a significant role across various cultural, mythological, and literary contexts, representing themes such as strength, resilience and protection. From ancient mythology and medieval symbolism to modern literature and jewelry, thorns embody the balance between beauty and defense.

ROSE MIRAGE BY RUXANDRA

Deserts are mysterious places, being the land of mirages. I used to think that mirages are hallucinations, but actually they are real visual representations created by light refraction. How would a rose mirage look like? I tried to imagine it in this new pendant design. It makes use of negative spaces to create an airy shape which one could see floating in the hot desert sun. The message of the rose blooming in the desert is that anything is possible in this world and one should never ever loose hope.

This jewel is the third signature – part of every Fuchsia Beadingschool Academy membership.

Inspired by the striking beauty of gypsum crystals, these earrings are a tribute to the natural world.     I have a question about Domino by Laura. What is the central stone ? It seems to be a little bigger thann an 8 mm chaton and I don’t see it in the material list. Thanks in advance.
