Jewels from the “Aurora Borealis” Box

The Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, has captivated people for centuries, leading to the creation of various legends and myths across different cultures. Now it’s time for us beaders to look up at the winter sky and enjoy the magical colors of this beautiful magical phenomenon.

You can bead these jewels from the January/February Theme Box of the Beadingschool Academy. As a Beadingschool Academy Student, you receive one or two signature jewel tutorials depending on your membership. Every Thursday, we bring you a #NoOneHasToBeadAlone workshop where you can use the same material. You can download these tutorials as gifts from Beadingschool for a limited time – 3 days after a workshop.

Additional tutorials will be available in the Bead Shop, and there might be more in beading magazines, and made by our friends – designers.

If you are a Beadingschool Academy Student, I highly recommend putting together ‘mini kits’ for the jewels you’d like to make!

This way, you can make sure that you can finish everything that you’d like to. There are many possibilities to use the precious content of the Box, as not only the Beadingschool Creative Team but fellow designers are also designing jewels for you, and sometimes you’ll need to make decisions about how you’d like to use a component or add something from your stash if you’d like to bead them all.

RED LAK EARRINGS BY ERIKA

Once, during every Beadingschool Academy Theme, we bead a retro #NoOneHasToBeadAlone design. It feels nice to compare what we liked back then and, how our preferences changed, how much our skills have evolved.
This time we are returning to the RED LAK motif that we beaded originally during the Lucia’s Light Theme. I love the gentle sparkle of it in the new Aurora Borealis colors!
The earring has an elegant, lacy effect, and while it’s sturdy when beaded with Fireline, it looks misleadingly fragile thanks to all the open spaces between the Miyuki Slender Bugle beads.

BOREUS EARRINGS AND PENDANT BY ERIKA

When I was thinking about Aurora Borealis, a beautiful cold winter night came to mind—walking outside, enjoying the crisp, cold air and stopping occasionally to look up at the dark sky dotted with sparkly stars and snowflakes landing gently on my face.
Some snowflakes are tiny, like this motif’s earring version, and some are more substantial, like the pendant variation.

MOUNTAIN VIEW EARRINGS BY ERIKA

I grew up in an area flat as my palm and live in The Netherlands, which also lacks diversity of landscape. Maybe that’s the reason why I find it so fascinating when I can look up a majestic mountain. Even better when it happens in the winter!
You can also receive the tutorial as a GIFT – with new Frozen Fuchsia SUN + MOON bundle.

SNOWDROP PENDANT BY ERIKA

The most dramatic piece of the collection uses the 18×25 mm flat-back triangle. Even if only a few beads and basic shapes were enough to create it, it was challenging to make it work. It certainly expanded my limits as a designer – sometimes, it isn’t easy to stay simple and elegant, but the triangle asked for this style. Wishing you lots of fun creating this unusual decoration on top of a cabochon!

CAMELLIA PENDANT BY ERIKA

Our Beadingschool Beaders asked for more bead embroidery projects. After Zuzi’s project for the Dangerous Liaisons Theme that you can find on the Blog and also download from here, here is another jewel, this time from me (Erika). I haven’t done much bead embroidery during the past two years, and I was curious to see how my Traveller-style decoration with concentric circles works around a triangular cabochon. How do you like it?

POLARIS EARRINGS BY ERIKA

Beam beads are great for building materials, and I am always amazed by your enthusiasm when we work on a triangular motif. The Beams give this piece a sturdy structure, enough to even add the more substantial 6 mm Preciosa Chaton Montees in between, with plenty of extra bling around them.

WINTER TREASURES EARRINGS BY VERONKA

Veronika from the Beadingschool Team enjoys time off to welcome her newborn baby. Before we had said goodbye to her for some time, she sent me an idea for a color combination and chose a snowflake-shaped component from the historic filigree library waiting for revival. She wishes you lots of fun while playing with them!

HELLEBORUS EARRING BY NITTI

Let’s go for a winter hike! The landscape is covered by snow. The mountain seems to be even more rigid and cold. Its sharp rocks peak through the snow blanket.  In the distance, deers are running and trying to hide in the nearby forest. You listen to the so familiar sound of the crispy snow under your boots. And then suddenly you see a shy little flower appearing in between the cold boulders.
Helleborus is a little motif that plays with layers of Miyuki Slender Bugle beads and Beam beads. We’re going to bead it as one of our #NoOneHasToBeadAlone jewels.

ICICLE EARRING BY NITTI

As a child I used to play a lot with icicles in the winter. They are crystal clear, reflect the light and in the same time let it shine through themselves.
I created two variations for this earring. A smaller version uses only one 8×16 mm Triangle cabochon, while the bigger version consists three of them. You can glue the 5 mm flat ear studs to the back of the Preciosa Nacre Cabochons before you start to do the bezel of you can opt for a different earring hook.

HEADING NORTH BRACELET BY NITTI

We used to have pretty cold and long winters in Hungary when I was a child. The colder the weather got and the more snow we had, the brighter those sparkling children eyes became. When we had a fair amount of snow, my mom got our sleigh from the shed, put some nice and warm blankets on it and that’s how she picked us up from school and kindergarten. We were snuggled in the blankets with my brother and that’s how my mom walked home almost a mile with us. Those afternoons are cherished memories of mine. The winter magic that is surrounding us, the sparkle of the freshly falling snow, the track that our sleigh left behind and the tiny lights of the village reflecting from every snow crystal. Sometimes I imagined all the places we could go to with our sleigh. I imagined to see the Northern Lights as they dance above us.

CRYSTAL ANEMONE BY CHLOE

Chloe will join me for a #NoOneHasToBeadAlone workshop again! She will share with you the tutorial for these dainty crystal components use just a few materials for maximum effect! Fast to make up, you can make several in an evening.
I’ll show you how to create a unique bezel to capture a chaton with added crystal sparkle!
These versatile components have so many uses – use them to create earrings, pendants, statement necklaces and more!

AURORA PENDANT BY ZUZI

Zuzi designed this pendant (or brooch) inspired by the material from the Academy box and the ancient mythology. Aurora is the goddess of the dawn, a beautiful woman with rosy fingers, announcing the arrival of the sun. She is known for her role in awakening the world each day, dispersing the darkness with the light of the new day.
Similar to the northern lights, this pendant reflects the sun so important for its creation as long as the winter night sky where it appears.

SELENE BRACELET BY ZUZI

Selene is the goddess and personification of the Moon, and is sister of Aurora. The stars of the night sky and connections between them made by lines of bugle beads are coming together in this bracelet. You can easily make matching earrings, with or without the decorated filigrees.

Helios, the god of sun, is brother to Aurora and Selene. The rays of sunlight gives life to all the living, lighting up also the night sky when aurora borealis appears. Zuzi created the earrings, but the motif itself can be also a connector or brooch.

WINTERLAND PENDANT  BY RUXI

A special connection between the two winter themes – The Winter Tale and Aurora Borealis comes together in this intricate pendant by our friend-designer, Ruxandra Puscas. This is our first signature jewel and the tutorial is part of Fuchsia, Turquoise and Yellow membership.
The pendant is composed of smaller elements so you can create matching earrings of your personal taste, too.

VALENTINA EARRINGS  AND PENDANT BY RUXI

Imagine wearing a piece of jewelry that mirrors the vibrant colors and dancing lights of the Northern Lights. The swirling hues of purple and pink could be encapsulated through the newest design by Ruxandra Puscas that mimics the mesmerizing patterns of this natural phenomenon.
The earring was published as OFFLINE #NoOneHasToBeadAlone, with no live video, only PDF file. The pendant tutorial is going to be published separately.

Ruxandra didn’t stop to amaze us as she created another pair of gorgeous earrings using the 18×21 mm triangle cabochons – this time WITHOUT the metal claw settings, using the smaller version of the flat-back cabochons.

    I recieved my first Academy box yesterday, yeahhh. I absolutely love the theme, the colorpalet is stunning and mezmerising and all the materials are such good quality! I’ve made the Red Lak Earrings design and turned it into a reversable pendant. I love all the beautiful designs the team have made, I’m in awe too, you all did a fabulous job! And if I may choose a favorite… I can’t wait to make the Aurora Pendant, designed by Zuzi, stunning!🤩💜🤍💙Karin

    The collection looks wonderful. I’m waiting to receive my order. The tutorials begin before I receive the collection which is disappointing. I received the November-December collection around the 20th of December. And hopefully I will receive the latest collection prior to the end of the month. The jewels and beads look beautiful and I look forward to each box just wondering if I can change my shipping selection.
