We have a new box landing on our beadmats, ‘The Spice Bazaar’.  Let’s bead together the newest collection of Beadingschool Academy jewels!

You can bead these jewels from the January/February Theme Box of the Beadingschool Academy. As a Beadingschool Academy Student, you receive one or two signature jewel tutorials depending on your membership. Every Thursday, we bring you a #NoOneHasToBeadAlone workshop where you can use the same material. You can download these tutorials as gifts from Beadingschool for a limited time – 3 days after a workshop.

Additional tutorials will be available in the Bead Shop, and there might be more in beading magazines, and made by our friends – designers.

BECOME A STUDENT OF THE BEADINGSCHOOL ACADEMY!

If you are a Beadingschool Academy Student, I highly recommend putting together ‘mini kits’ for the jewels you’d like to make!

This way, you can make sure that you can finish everything that you’d like to. There are many possibilities to use the precious content of the Box, as not only the Beadingschool Creative Team but fellow designers are also designing jewels for you, and sometimes you’ll need to make decisions about how you’d like to use a component or add something from your stash if you’d like to bead them all.

BALLERINA BY ERIKA

Once, during every Beadingschool Academy Theme, we bead a RETRO #NoOneHasToBeadAlone design. This time, we returned to Ballerina earrings. The motif can also be used to make a delicate pendant, brooch or you can connect more motifs into a bracelet.

RAWIYA BY ERIKA

Rawiya means ‘dream’ or ‘vision’ in Arabic. As we grind through the everyday tasks of our busy lives, let’s believe once more, just like when we were hot-hearted teenagers, that happy times are coming and everything is possible. The first step is to dare to dream about it!

BAHJA BY ERIKA

The word ‘bahja’ is connected in my mind to Marrakesh – my favorite city from all around the world. I visited it three times (with my sister, with my ex-husband’s family, and on my own), and every time it showed me something else – about the city and myself. What was the same though were the incredible amount of heartwarming, happy moments I got to share with the Marrakeshi ‘bahjis’ – the always happy locals who are always open to share a glass of mint tea, and a story or two or three.

You can use the Bahja motif as a single pendant, or join several of them into a bracelet, or statement necklace. If you like shoulder-duster earrings – this is for you, too!

The Bahja motif will be the second signature jewel of The Spice Bazaar Collection, and it is part of Fuchsia membership.

TARIQ BY ERIKA

Tariq means ‘road’ in Arabic. Have you ever had the feeling that no matter how well you plan, life will take you somewhere else? No worries, the unexplored might be even more colorful, adventurous and exciting than the well-paved road you had on your mind. My therapist said recently: ‘Not knowing the future is not a problem to be solved.’ I think she’s very right. Let’s take it one step at a time. One bead at a time. The journey itself is already worth it if we open our minds to the new possibilities.

ZAHRA BY ERIKA

Zahra means ‘flower’ in Arabic. Since it’s forbidden in the Muslim religion to create portraits and show figures, most of the decoration that you see – no matter if in books or buildings – is inspired by flowers. Think about the Taj Mahal of India and its colorful gemstone inlays. The Preciosa crystals in your Zahra earrings will sparkle like them, when the sun shines!

CARDAMOM BRACELET BY VERONIKA

It happened two and a half years ago when I visited Erika in Amsterdam with Zuzi. We were about to leave for a bus to the airport, in a hurry, as we were unfamiliar with the town and tried not to get lost. But I really wanted to bring something from the trip for my “he is just a very good friend” :-). I love chai latte with coffee and I drank it a few times in Amsterdam as well, so I thought, that chai spice from that one small shop would be a really good souvenir! But we somehow couldn’t find it. Finally, at the last minute, I saw it and ran inside, while Zuzi was waiting for me outside with my luggage. And, surprisingly, we managed to catch the plane too! Fast forward, this particular chai spice still lives with my now husband, on our shelf, in our home. And that is why chai will be always so special to me, and why I decided to name my jewels after some of its main components :-).

This bracelet got its name from the greenish color of cardamom! It is a different fun way to bezel a rivoli – yay! Quick and versatile project, perfect as a last-minute gift, or outfit finishing!

NUTMEG EARRINGS BY VERONIKA

The intriguing components of this motif invited me to play with a little bit of negative space and square shapes. Rectangle beads with just one hole, however opening so many possibilities! Nutmeg is a very similar spice in nature – seems to be simple, but its flavor is such a sophisticated experience, fitting into all kinds of cuisine and meals.

When beading this motif, you will also learn how to make a cute thin (and fast!) bracelet! Make it in more different colors, and the atmosphere of a “Spice bazaar” will be always with you.

CLOVE EARRINGS BY ZUZI

This earring design was inspired directly by the the Spice Bazaar box, when I selected the beads we know so well already. ‘Old shapes’, but a new design. After a while of beading, I realised the motif reminds me of the clove – spice with a rounded center, four spiky star corners and the little slender stem that holds the flower. I love its scent and the taste in cookies and other meals.

We’re going to bead these earrings as part of the #NoOneHasToBeadAlone.

The size of the motif is: 2.8 x 2.2 cm / 1.1 x 0.86 inch

SAFFRON ROUTE NECKLACE BY ZUZI

Hints of adventure, history, and the calling of ancient trade routes, where caravan slowly passes countries and continent, delivering precious goods and the spice. This jewel reflects connecting, travel, and the legacy of the spice trade, as it’s composed of more beaded elements.

Zuzi will show you another way of bezelling the gemstone cabochon. Also, the unfoiled navette motif is designed in a way that the thread is not visible on its back side. You can play on your own, creating pairs of earrings, a bracelet, or a simple single gemstone pendant according to your personal taste. Just like the mixture of the spice each of us like a bit differently.

  • Gemstone motif: 4.5 x 2.5 mm / 1.77 x 0.98 inch

PINCH OF CINNAMON EARRING BY NITTI

Nitti is spicing up the Spice Bazaar collection with fresh looking earring shape. Just like the pinch of cinnamon that adds the taste and smell. Let’s play with the donut and 2-hole bar beads!

MAGIC SPICE BOTTLE PENDANT BY RUXI

Ruxi says about her jewel: ‘The long journey to make it (132 steps) is like a beady recreation of the Silk Road, which for more than 1500 years has brought to our part of the world, among others, the magical spices from the Far East. The Silk Road is neither an actual road nor a single route, but rather a network of routes used by traders. So is this pendant. 🙂 It sometimes leads into surprising directions and takes some unexpected turns, but in the end it all comes together. I hope the ladies will enjoy it as much as I did creating it.’

This is the first signature jewel.

SPICY FLOWER PENDANT BY RUXI

Ruxi’s design signature is known for a lacey look intricate design. This small pendant captures the fiery passion of nature’s blooms, inspires confidence and radiates a vibrant energy through the colors of the Spice Bazaar. We’ll learn a new way of decorating the bezel with the largest of Miyuki seed beads and the Preciosa bicone beads we love so much!

TURKISH DELIGHT BY VICKY

Vicky says: ‘During my early twenties, I spent several summers exploring the vibrant culture of Turkey. These years fostered beautiful friendships and created many memories. As a lifelong admirer of jewellery, I was captivated by the countless shops overflowing with gemstone-adorned pieces in gold and silver. Vibrant hues of turquoise and coral frequently graced the window displays, leaving a lasting impression.

This piece, titled “Turkish Delight,” seeks to capture that enchanting aesthetic. I aimed to incorporate the allure of gemstones, drawing inspiration from the intricate metalwork often seen in marcasite pendants. The delicate touches of gold and bronze represent the pyrite embedded in silver, giving marcasite its distinctive sparkle.

The name “Turkish Delight” is a fitting tribute. Not only does it evoke the exquisite jewelry that captivated me, but it also pays homage to the beloved confection. The heady aroma of rosewater, so prevalent in Turkish Delight markets, which lingers in my memories and is still today, one of my favourite sweet treats.’

CINNAMON STAR PENDANT BY LAURA

Laura says: ‘I was inspired by the star motif in the beautiful Heart of the Bazaar pendant, and by its recurrence in beautiful Turkish carpets which remind me of the bazaar.’

This pattern uses double layers of double-cubic-right-angle-weave to form sturdy circles, and 3D peyote stitch to form the star. It will give beaders ideas on how to create strength and structure in their beadwork in a variety of ways.

ALHAMBRA PENDANT BY LAURA

Laura says: ‘This piece is inspired by the filigree itself and the amazing architecture in the Alhambra palace in Granada. The Moorish style of architecture with the beautiful ornate carvings really left an impression on me when I visited a few years ago, and this beautiful filigree reminded me of the palace.’

This design uses a brick-stitch method to attach the bezelled chatons to the filigree. This allows beaders to create a design with a filigree that isn’t reliant on bead embroidery. I also use the size 15 beads to make the design more solid, so this will also give beaders ideas for creating sturdy designs that still look delicate!

MOROCCAN TILE BY ANIKO HESZ

Aniko says about the inspiration: ‘Opening the box, my memories took me back immediately to the oriental bazaars, where I had been before. I was inspired by the multitude of senses, evoked by the colors, shapes and components in the new box. I wanted to use everything at once, then then my first choice was the art cabochon and the toggle clasp, so I built the design around these. The many beautiful beads urged me to squeeze as much detail into a medium-sized piece of jewel as is usually found in oriental jewels.’

Beaders can learn a way of bezeling a square art cabochon with classical peyote and brushing it up with some decoration and attaching unusual components.

    If I had to pick a favourite it would be the Saffron Route necklace, closely followed by the Alhambra pendant and the Tariq earrings. I have my box so just waiting for the tutorials!
