Selene decorated filigree tutorial

It’s always nice to add a filigree to your beadwork and there are so many options how to do it. One of them is decorating it with beads!

Zuzi chose to add the Aurora Borealis filigree component to her Selene design we beaded during #NoOneHasToBeadAlone. The filigree itself can be used as a connector, or the main motif of your earring – just hang it to the earwire and add a pendant drop to the bottom!

For decorating your Aurora Boralis filigree (one motif) you’ll need:

FILI –  19 mm Aurora Borealis filigree in silver color (1pc)

FP3 –  3 mm fire-polished bead (4 pcs)

BIC3- 3 mm Preciosa bicone beads (4 pcs)

DROP –  3.4 mm Miyuki Drop (1 pc)

R15 – 15/0 Miyuki round seed beads

C11 – 11/0 Miyuki Delica beads

Pick up FILI + DROP by beading through the hole in the centre of FILI. Bead back to FILI.

The DROP bead itself creates a ‘stop-bead’, there’s no need to knot at the moment.

NOTE: The center is divided into 8 sections. The FP3 DOESN’T nest in the hole.

Pass to the front according to the picture.

*Pick up FP3 and bead to the next open hole in the FILI.

The thread on the back of the FILI anchors when you’re beading up.

Repeat from * 3 more time and exit from the first FP3 you added.

Add BIC3 between every FP3, total of 4 BIC3 and exit from the second BIC3 you added.

You work on the front side of the motif, not passing through the filigree.

*Pick up (2) R15 + C11 + (2) R15 and bead to next BIC3.

Repeat from * 3 more times and exit from BIC3 after the first group of beads you added.

*Pass through (2)R15 + C11.

Bead down to the FILI in the opposite direction and back up to C11 while you anchor the beads to the FILI.

Pass through (2) R15 + BIC3.

Repeat from * 3 more times.

You can exit to the back of the FILI, meeting both thread ends, tie the knot and trim.

Pick up BUG + R15 + P3 + (4) R15 + FILI as pictured.

Pick up (2) R15 and bead to the first R15 from the group of 4.

Pass through P3 + R15.

Pick up BUG + R15 + FP3 + R15 + BUG + R15 + P3 + R15 + BUG + (3) R15 + P3 + (7) R15 + toggle clasp.

Bead back to the first R15 from the group of 7.

Pass through P3 + (3) R15. Pick up BUG and bead through R15 + P3 + R15.

Pick up BUG and bead through R15 + FP3 + R15 + BUG.

Retrace the thread path to FILI and back to clasp component.

When beading back to P3, pass through (2) R15. Pick up R15 + BUG + R15 + P3 + R15 + BUG + R15 + FP3 + R15 + BUG + R15 + P3 + (3) R15 + FILI + (3) R15 and bead to the first R15 from the group of 3.

Pass through P3 + R15. Pick up BUG and bead through R15 + FP3 + R15.

Pick up BUG and bead through R15 + P3 + R15.

Pick up BUG and bead to R15.

You can retrace the thread path to clasp to strengthen the connection, navigate to meet both thread ends, tie knot and trim.
